At Drummoyne Dental Practice, we are pleased to offer our anxious patients the option of Intravenous Sedation (IV sedation) during dental procedures. If you have avoided visiting the dentist because of bad past experiences or simply because you are afraid, then dental care with IV sedation may be the solution for you. Terms such as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sedation” are used to describe IV sedation. Twilight means that hours will feel like seconds. You remain conscious but you tend to drift off to sleep. You will not remember the procedure.
The sedation is provided by a medical specialist who is taking care of you throughout the entire procedure while the dental practitioner performs the dental treatment. As your sedation is being administered by a registered medical practitioner, you will be eligible to claim for a Medicare rebate for the cost of your sedation.
During the dental procedure, you are in a “twilight state” where you are relaxed, and sleepy, while still being able to follow simple directions given by the dentist. The effects of the sedative make you feel as if you have had a relaxing sleep and you are left with no (or very little) memory of the actual procedure.
